Gerald Zelmer, 87, passed away on Sunday, April 22nd. Gerald (known as Jerry), was born in Benton Harbor, MI to Rodolph and Edyth Zelmer. He attended school through the 8th grade, later joined the Army and completed two years of college. He was a veteran who served in the Korean War. After the Army, he met his wife, Harriet Zelmer, of 38 years at the YMCA in Chicago, IL. Harriet passed in October 1992. They had four children together and are survived by them: Derek Zelmer of Concord, CA; Valerie Zelmer, of Martinez, CA, Rudy Zelmer (and Karri), of Marshall TX, and Janis Zelmer, of Martinez, CA.
During his life, he was devoted to his family and church. He became Catholic prior to getting married and was devout in his faith. Jerry was a parishioner at St. Bonaventure’s Church in Concord, for over 55 year and frequently attended Our Lady, Queen of the World Church in Bay Point. He served the church in many capacities, including volunteering for St. Vincent DePaul and Loaves and Fishes. Later he became a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and was active in their fundraising and spiritual activities. He was also involved in the Boy Scouts for many years and was President of the PTA when his children were young.
He worked at Systron Donnor as a design draftsman designing integrate electronic circuitry for various instruments, including sensors and systems for the Military and U.S. Government, as well as, the NASA Space Program. Jerry retired in 1992 after over 30 years of service.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday, April 26 from 4 – 8 pm with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm at Connolly and Taylor. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of the World on Friday, April 27th at 10:30 with a reception in the church hall directly after Mass.
