Burton Joseph Harrington, 84, passed away May 17, 2017 at Pleasant Hill Manor in Pleasant Hill, California. Burt was born on September 24, 1932 in Woodland, California to Winnie (Koll) and Joseph Harrington. He spent his childhood in Weaverville and Redding, California.
After high school and junior college in Redding, Burt moved to Oakland, California where he worked for Hersey Inspection Bureau, Alta Building Material Company, J. H. Fitzmaurice General Contractors, and retired after many years at Contra Costa Landscaping Company. He was active in the California Landscape Contractors Association and the International Erosion Control Association.
Burt loved the outdoors. When he was younger, he loved to go camping and hiking. He led backpacking trips for the Sierra Club at both the local and national level. He loved to read and always had a book or two by his side. He spent many happy days going bird watching with his sister, Marilyn. Burt was a longtime friend of Bill W.
Burt was predeceased by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Chuck O’Connor; and a nephew, Kevin O’Connor. He is survived by his partner of 32 years, Janet Thomas of Martinez; his children, Nora (Fred) Taylor of Montana, Robert (Darla) Harrington of California, and Helen (Craig) Harrington of Idaho; his grandchildren Carl (Jen) Harrington of Nevada, Josh (Jess) Harrington of Canada, and Elise Harrington of Massachusetts; and six nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m., May 26th at Connolly & Taylor Chapel at 4000 Alhambra Ave. in Martinez.
