Bertell Henry Black of Martinez, California passed away on May 4, 2020 at the age of 97.
Bertell was born to Henry and Florence Black on October 17, 1922 in Rodeo, California. Bert attended high school at John Swett High school in Crockett, California. Later in life, he attended night school and obtained his GED. He joined the Navy and was honorably discharged in December 1946. Bert served on many different ships for the Navy, and was in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Bertell married the love of his life, Mary Halstead, on October 15, 1946 in Los Angeles, California. He worked most of his life for the government at Concord Navy Weapon station.
Bertell and Mary enjoyed camping and traveling all across the United States. Bert was known for his drawings of cartoon characters and drew many pictures for his family and neighborhood children. Bertell’s drawings were made into coloring books for the pediatric unit of the local hospital where he volunteered. Bertell was also a Boy Scout leader and a Sea Scout committee leader. He was a proud Past Master Mason.
Bertell is survived by his son Dennis (Wendy) of Rodeo, CA, son Gary (Cathy) of Palermo, CA and daughter Darlene Hovde of Fertile, MN. Bertell is also survived by seven grandchildren (Jeremy, Linda, Sean, Jessica, Francesca, Steven, Kathy), 13 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Mary, son Dale, son-in-law Jon Hovde, his parents, his sister Lois Burgess and brother Everett Black.
Bertell was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
